P & F Under 12 Tennis Tournament
Well, our OLSCC P&F Under 12 Championship has finished. I know you can't wait to know about all the amazing tennis, but we need to thank our sponsors and helpers.
Firstly, like all great things, our event was 'Parent Powered'. P&F President Lotte Verhoef, Sue Johansson, Donna Nothdurft, Steve Forbes, Jenni Ackland, Steve Conn and Megan Cartwright all assisted with the umpiring and setting up of the matches as well as cheering on the players.
Thank you to Coach Ben Campbell from Faultless Tennis Academy for lots of help and advice. Thank you also to Dalby & District Tennis Association and their club President Steve Forbes for allowing us to use the club, the courts and the BBQ and for helping on the day. We also must thank our awesome school, OLSCC, for sponsoring the trophy. And a big thank you to the children who participated. They were fair and played hard and had lots of fun.
The overall winner of the Junior Tennis tournament Under 12 trophy was Patrick Forbes who won his match against Rohan Cartwright. Most of the other matches were fun games and the players enjoyed the experience of playng a proper match and fine tuning the skills they have been learning in their tennis lessons. Those players were Penelope Cartwright, Mathew Ackland, Jessica Ackland, Kago Masako, Sega Masako, Alex Nothdurft, Lucinda Conn, Charlise Conn and Monique Smith. Parents Lotte Conn and Jenni Ackland played a parents match unpired by Donna Nothdurft.

This week our College diaries focus on the virtue of Wisdom and the character strength - Love of Learning. As a College we strive to instil this in ourselves and our students as we grow to understand that in life our learning never ends and wisdom is often found through the challenges and mistake moments of our lives. This prayer was shared with staff this week:
Heavenly Father
You know every decision I need to make and every challenge I face.
Please forgive for the times I try to figure this life out on my own.
I need you.
I need your holy spirit to give me strength, wisdom, and direction.
Amen
Youth Mass
Our next Youth led Mass at St Joseph’s 6pm Mass will be on 1 June. All young people and their families are encouraged to attend and join in where possible. These are held on the first Saturday Mass each month if you would like to get involved in one of the jobs eg welcomer, reader, singer, musician please contact Cate Brennan via the office or email cate.brennan@twb.catholic.edu.au
Intergenerational/Intercultural Wisdom needed
OLSCC are seeking interested persons to be a part of a PRAXIS initiative with Year 9 students, running from Term 2 until the end of the year. The project will involve developing relationships with students, sharing stories, interests and wisdom. Participants will then be interviewed over a series of sessions in order to create films about their life which they will be gifted at the end of the project. Sessions will take place at OLSCC on Wednesdays from 12:30pm – 1:30pm. We hope this project will assist students to learn from other members of the community who have experienced different generations and cultures and strengthen the bonds of our St Joseph’s Parish/OLSCC community. If interested, please contact
Cate Brennan (Cate.Brennan@twb.catholic.edu.au) or
Nicholas Blauw (Nicholas.Blauw@twb.catholic.edu.au) or

Our Term 2 assessment calendars are now available on the College website at the link below. These calendars have also been emailed to all students in Years 9-12. The end of semester is a busy time and students should be looking ahead to manage their after-school commitments. I encourage all parents to ask their students to write their assessment dates into their student diaries.

PLEASE USE TIMES AS A GUIDE ONLY
This term, students are developing an understanding of the role of victims, bystanders and collaborators by exploring and responding to the events of the Holocaust. Our first weeks have seen students learn more about how the Jewish people were treated during this period of World War II. As we travel further through the unit, students will examine the story from a number of Holocaust survivors and experience signs of courage and hope that were present in this horrific event. Our assessment instrument this term is a persuasive essay and time will be spent consolidating each student’s writing skills with this type of task.
We are also spending time engaging with the Prayer of St Francis. Each lesson we consider how this prayer connects with what we have discovered in our study of the Holocaust.
The Prayer of St Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.
Year 9 Religious Education and Faith Development
The Year 9 Religion class has a set routine to begin their lesson, where they read the daily scripture, reflect on key ideas within and write an “I hope” statement as a type of prayer in thinking of others. This term the class will be looking at the history of the Catholic Church and the influential key figures that influenced its development and progression including icons of our College. The common thread that students have noticed so far about these individuals was that they went against societal norms of the time in order to look after the poor and needy.
Wil Brady commented on his research on Catherine McAuley stating, “She was a woman of great determination and bravery, who instead of living a life of luxury, decided to teach the uneducated souls of the world, the poor and helpless women of society”.
The class will progress through further research on Mary MacKillop, Edmund Rice, Nano Nangle, Elizabeth Seton to name a few, in order to evaluate their impact on the Church. Their investigation will look at how these spiritual mothers and fathers in history participated in the work of Christ, speaking out against injustice and acting to have human dignity respected.
Year 9 Visual Art designed and painted a mural at the Dalby Shoppingworld underground carpark based on a 2019 theme. Students considered the 2019 theme and considered components carefully. The earth represents how the general public is starting to realise that we need to take care of the earth with ideas of stewardship being in the forefront of popular thinking. The puzzle pieces on the figure reflects the acceptance of races and diversity. She becomes a universal figure for us all as she holds the globe in her hand, presenting the responsibility of the world for future generations. This further highlights how we are global citizens. The repetitive palm leaves depict nature and the devised quote illustrates the magnitude of self-care and respect. Their design was produced at school to scale in colour on paper first, with approval from Centre Management at the Shopping centre to then reproduce on the wall at the location near the travelator. The mural size is over 2 metres long. Students in Year 9 Visual Art that undertook this activity were Emmason McIlveen, Mackenzie Wedrat, Phoebe O’Connor, Anna Lilburne, Dakota Wilson and Alyssa Ferguson painted the design on Saturday 4 May from 9am to 3pm. All students should be very proud of this collaborative mural, it is certainly a very professional and well-considered design.
My name is Caine Wager and I am very pleased to be able to advise the Our Lady of the Southern Cross community about a new opportunity for students to excel through instrumental music in the College’s new instrumental music program. This exciting opportunity is available to all students in Years 4 & 5 at the College. Students accessing the program will select from one of the below instruments:
- Flute
- Clarinet
- Alto Saxophone
- Trumpet
- Trombone
- Percussion
Parents and students will be able to collect an Expression of Interest form from tomorrow, 10 May 2019 from the College Office.
The aim of this program is to develop a College Junior Concert band, committed to giving all students the ability to develop performance skills and provide an outlet for Arts excellence. It is expected that students who participate in the program will become a part of the College ensemble and go on to represent the College with pride at competitions, festivals and community events.
Weekly lessons will be offered at a cost of $15.00 per lesson. Students will learn in small groups of 4 and 8 to facilitate a personalised touch while still maintaining the overall goal of establishing a band. These lessons will be on a rotating roster each Monday.
Students who already have an instrument or have been undertaking instrumental lessons in the past and wish to continue are also welcome. These students will also need to complete a new Expression of Interest form and join the program. Students will be placed into groups and lessons will be on Tuesday mornings for these continuing students.
I personally cannot wait to meet our budding musicians and their families as we commence our journey to creating an outstanding Concert Band and Instrumental program at Our Lady of the Southern Cross College.
If you have any further questions about the commencement of Instrumental lesson feel to ring the College or email me: caine.wager@twb.catholic.edu.au
