Last Friday evening Mrs Marg Callaghan, passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer. Mrs Callaghan, as well as being a past student, parent and grandparent of the College, worked in our College office for 21 years. Mrs Callaghan’s funeral will be this Friday at 1:00pm at St Joseph’s Catholic Church. Our College will be represented at the funeral by both staff and students as we express our love and respect for Marg’s life and her impact on our community. Her caring and compassionate nature surely made her ‘one of a kind’. She greeted every person in our office with her warm smile and treated all with unending kindness. Marg seemed to have the same effect on everyone, students who came to the office were gently nurtured and chided, staff supported and admonished, Principals assisted and corrected, parents and visitors greeted and directed – all with the deft measure of experience and humanity that was uniquely Marg’s. Whilst we farewell her with a tear, we remember her with a smile. Rest in peace, Marg.
The staff from the Library would like to say a huge thank you to all the students and staff who made such a huge effort for today's Book Parade.
Staffing Arrangements
We are very close to finalising the appointment of new staff members to our team. This has been a difficult process with the current applicant pool, though over the past 2 weeks we have received some excellent candidates and have engaged a rigorous process to ensure the best long term staff are employed for our students. We thank students, staff and parents for their patience during this time, and look forward to welcoming our new staff as soon as they can begin. A note will go home early next week with more precise details once the appointments have been confirmed.
New College Coach
This week we welcomed our new College Coach. Whilst in reality it is simply a bunch of seats with wheels, the value of this coach to our community is much greater. Whilst we have fantastic facilities at our College, the coach enables student access to all facilities that are beyond our capability to install at the College. Being in a location such as ours, we spend considerable dollars on transport to access meaningful learning and extra-curricular experiences. Through analysis we determined that we could provide far more access for around the same total cost per year by making this purchase. The reality is that the expenditure for individual trips will be far cheaper without having an impact on the College budget in other areas.
I would like to acknowledge the proposal from Hannah Patterson last year which outlined the benefits of the coach, and hence the reason that she was the first student both on and off the coach on Monday. Thanks also to all involved in this procurement including Mrs Kuruilaca, Mr Peterson and Mr Kavney, who provided the analysis and procurement of the best fit coach for our College. Both groundsmen also spent a day last holidays test driving and assessing the wide array of vehicles available to best suit our needs. In addition, Father Jim Cronin’s blessing of the bus on Monday was much appreciated, as was the presence of the community. May we be blessed with many safe ventures and much greater learning and engagement through this initiative.
Rugby Success
On Wednesday evening the College continued its engagement in the Darling Downs Super Schools Cup with our first home game against Scots PGC Warwick. The rugby was fantastic, the spirit welcoming and the community support was amazing. Although there is much work behind the scenes to make these opportunities available, it certainly is worth every minute of investment in seeing the life lessons learnt on the paddock. Well done to all and sundry in the organisation of our College in this initiative, especially the parents and the Dalby Wheatmen!

Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum - React
It is great to see and hear the work being done in our College on the Daniel Morcombe Curriculum, with the focus on the second safety message: react, be sure to follow up the school conversations with ones at home to reinforce this message.
When children recognise that they are in an unsafe situation, we encourage them to think about what they could do to be safe again. They will have opportunities to think about ways to react using real-life scenarios. Our students will also learn that breaking the rules (e.g. saying no to an adult who is behaving inappropriately) is sometimes necessary so that they can become safe again.
Please take the time to talk with your children about what they have been learning about safety and, in particular, the ways they could react if they are unsafe to make themselves safe again. Talking with your child about ways to stay safe will help them to develop life-long safety skills.
It is important that the key safety messages of the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum: Recognise, React and Report are reinforced, both at school and home. I encourage you, wherever possible, to talk with your child about safety to help them stay safe now and in the future.

Results from the SWQ All Schools Championships are listed below. Thanks to Mrs Gleeson and Mrs Sankey for coaching our teams. It was a successful day for the College with the Under 15 Girls finishing second in their pool and narrowly missing a place in the semi finals based on percentage, the Under 15 Boys won their pool but lost their Semi Final and the U18 Mixed Team lost the Grand Final in a Drop Off. Teams are now preparing for the QLD All Schools Carnival in October.

Best of luck to the Senior Vicki Wilson Cup Netball Team who compete in Toowoomba on Sunday. Two Junior Teams will compete in the Under 15 Vicki Wilson Cup in Toowoomba on Sunday 1 September.
Rugby Sevens
An Under 14 and Under 16 Girls along with Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 Boys teams will compete at the Scots PGC Warwick Sevens Carnival on Saturday 14 September. The Girls teams have a trial game against Mary MacKillop Highfields and St Ursula’s College on Friday 6 September at Highfields in the Under 13 and Under 15 age groups. Teams will also compete in the SWQ Sevens Series in Term 4 in Toowoomba. Girls will play on Tuesday afternoons starting 15 October and Boys will play on Thursday afternoons from 17 October. Age groups for this competition are Under 13, Under 15 and Open.

Middle Leader Sport
On Monday, 19 August, four senior years students, Ben Forbes, Patrick Kelly, Hugh Faggotter and Jonty MacDougall participated in the Darling Downs Secondary School Teams Tennis Challenge. This competition is conducted by Tennis Queensland and is a state wide tournament. To start the day, the boys had to play pool matches against Downlands College and Centenary Heights SHS. In the pool matches, the boys play one match of Fast4 singles each and one match of Fast4 doubles. The boys convincingly won these rubbers dropping only a handful of games in total. This allowed us to be in the position to play off for 1st – 3rd position against two Grammar teams. This was a tough contest and called on the boys to play incredible tennis and demonstrate incredible team work and spirit. In our first rubber in the finals pool we lost to Grammar B by 2 games. Heartbroken by this close defeat, the boys rose to the challenge and beat Grammar A in the next rubber by 1 game. This meant, however that there was a TIE for first position. Unfortunately on a count-back the boys came third, with only a handful of games separating first and third. As coach I could not have been any prouder of the commitment, passion, enthusiasm, sportsmanship and team spirit demonstrated by the boys. A huge shout out to Ben Forbes and Patrick Kelly who won all of their singles matches. It was tough to be on the losing side of a countback but there is always NEXT year and we are planning our 2020 campaign already!

I am very excited to let you know that Charlotte Crothers has won selection to attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) at the Australian National University (ANU) in January next year.
The NYSF Year 12 Program is a 12-day residential program designed to give students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to encourage continued studies in these fields. At the NYSF Year 12 Program run in January each year, participants will:
- visit science and technology related laboratories and facilities,
- go on site tours,
- listen to lectures,
- take part in workshops,
- go to social events, and
- participate in group activities that improve communication and presentation skills.
Charlotte has also been successful at gaining the endorsement of both the local and regional arms of the Rotary club to attend the NYSF and this will see Rotary providing funding to cover part of Charlotte’s costs in attending the forum.
To gain selection Charlotte successfully negotiated an interview with local Rotary officials in May and then went on to compete in an extensive selection process held at Fairholme College last weekend. The final selection process included group based teamwork and leadership activities, impromptu public speaking, impromptu scientific problem solving activities and further interviews.
Our STEM club is looking at doing some fundraising to help Charlotte cover her remaining costs.

When we spoke to Charlotte, both she and her family were very excited to learn that she had won this opportunity and as the only one of her siblings to be interested in STEM, she knows that this is a great opportunity. Charlotte would like to thank Mr Routley for telling her about the competition and encouraging her to participate. With Physics and Chemistry as her favourite subjects, Charlotte has her sights set on studying Bio Medicine and then Medicine at University. Charlotte would also like to acknowledge the support of Rotary as they endorsed her and she hopes to be more involved with Rotary in the future.

Years 3 and 4 have been studying poetry this term. In Religion and LYF we have been considering Healing and Hope in facing difficult situations. We enjoyed this poem and then wrote our own class poems:
Hope is the place where you want to go,
Hope is the person whom you want to know,
Hope is the feeling that carries you through.
Hope is the future for me and for you.
Our students and some members of the staff joined in the Lantern Parade at the Delicious and Delightful Festival on the weekend and for the first time, the College made a big feature lantern. The big lantern was of Big Ben and certainly looked great amongst the spectacle of all the other lanterns. Well done to all involved!
Parkrun is a free weekly timed walk/run held in many places around the world every Saturday morning. We are lucky to have one here in Dalby and a few of ‘Our Lady’ students have been having a crack at the 5km event over the last few months.
If you have done a Parkrun anywhere, please come and tell Mr Aislabie and he can update the school record books. The following table also includes the students best age grade performance.
Well done to Tate Woodward who has taken the time to volunteer at the event recently.
Anybody interested in running or walking the event can see Mr Aislabie for more information or a laminated barcode.
Sam Luck and Tate Woodward are our current leaders of total events with six each. Mackenzie Wedrat has the highest age grading so far with 60.98% closely followed by Cooper Wedrat.

Did you know that more than half a million tonnes of textiles and leather end up in landfill in Australia every year!
The year 10 textiles students are in the midst of designing and creating textile items made from recycled denim and desperately need donations of denim.
Any colour, any size – all donations will be greatly appreciated.
