Welcome to 2025 at OLSCC
2024 was over in the blink of an eye! Our students have grown, matured, lost teeth and now are all ready for the year ahead. It has been very pleasing to see how the students from all sectors have arrived at the College ready to learn for the new academic year.
Again, we continue to offer an excellent education for all our 691 students at OLSCC. As I explained to the College community at the Commencement Mass on Monday, every one of our 2024 graduates left Year 12 well on their way in their chosen pathway, with a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) or a Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA). Every university applicant from OLSCC received their first preference for university prior to the end of the academic year. Many others continued in their apprenticeships from their School Based Apprenticeships, others progressed to further training, and others have begun in the workforce. Each of every one of our graduates go out into the world with the values and ethics that make them great people.
This year we will continue to provide an excellent well-rounded education for all our students. Last week all students in Years 3 to 8 began their study of Spanish with Mr Jose Jaimes. It is very exciting to have languages back at OLSCC and the way the students have engaged is excellent. Please ask your child about their Spanish lessons with Mr Jaimes and see what you can learn from them! In Year 6 Spanish today, I learned that every vowel is pronounced the same way in every word, even when two vowels are together. As a teacher, I wish English was so simple, there are 20 vowel sounds in our language to teach our early readers and spellers!
What’s Different in 2025?
Our Annual Action Plan has very consistent themes with 2024 as all our work is aligned to the College Strategic Plan released early last year.
Our 5 strategic areas are:
- Living Our Faith
- Learners of Influence and Impact
- Staff Empowered to Inspire
- Our Distinct Identity
- Equipping Our Future
Most important of these is developing the ability of our students to strive, excel and engage in the learning process. We have excellent classrooms where students are very compliant, teachers are well planned and prepared, and the quality of learning is very good. Our ongoing challenge is to develop every student, so they are actively engaged in learning in the classroom. I am currently doing a lot of reading regarding High Potential Learners and their ongoing engagement in the curriculum throughout their teenage years. High Potential Learners are generally recognised as in the top 10% of their cohort in a particular subject or activity. That means that in everything we do, we have high potential learners who are capable of performing to a higher standard than the other 90% in the cohort. We do not label 10% of our students as High Potential Learners and exclude them from activities to do other things, though we are further refining our practices so that the way we teach/coach allows the high potential to convert to high performance. This will be a gradual process throughout the year, though I am looking forward to a slight shift in practice and to make greater opportunities for our High Potential Learners.
New Displays
Another difference that students will certainly notice around the College are the new posters in every classroom regarding:
- The College Statement – outlining the focus areas of the College
- The OLSCC Learning Dispositions
- The OLSCC Learning Pit
- College Expectations
- The 5 B’s. Brain, Book or Board, Buddy, Boss.
These posters create clarity and consistency for our students. One poster that underpins our culture of learning at OLSCC is the College Expectations. These aren’t rules, these aren’t aspirational targets, these are the core expectations that we expect of each and every student, staff member, parent, and community member. The College Expectations are that everyone, everyday is able and willing to:
- Learn and allow others to learn
- Be safe
- Be respectful
- Be responsible.
Everyday, every student, in every grade, is expected to align to these expectations so that high quality teaching and learning is possible in every classroom. Most important is the first word and last word of the first expectation. LEARN. This means not to simply show up to class, it emphasises that the main reason for students to come to school is to LEARN. LEARN new concepts, understandings, and information, LEARN new skills and ways of thinking, LEARN new ways of working with others to solve problems and work collaboratively, LEARN how to contribute positively to the College and learning environment. The only person who can make the choice to LEARN is the individual. I expect each and every student and staff member to actively LEARN. Not passively learn by sitting in class and staring out the window, but to engage in the program of instruction and LEARN. It is not an option for a student to opt out of learning, or to refuse to follow instructions, or deliberately act against the College Expectations. The job of all students is to LEARN, that’s the primary reason they are here and those who actively learn and engage in their education will continue to reap rewards and access additional opportunities across LYF, Academia, Sport, and Arts.
Staff Right to Disconnect
In 2023 we developed our Right to Disconnect Protocols, which are linked for your interest. This document creates clarity regarding what can be reasonably expected of staff being contacted outside of their scheduled hours. The area that most impacts our communication between staff and the community is regarding “Response times for electronic communication”. This outlines that “OLSCC staff will respond to electronic communication within two working business days of its receipt, during the hours of 8.00am and 5.00pm Monday to Friday. This response time takes into consideration: time to consider an appropriate response to an issue, teaching commitments, absence due to travel and professional development, work schedules, weekends, leave, other non-working days, vacation periods and holidays.”
This means that in general work times, staff are expected to respond to electronic communication within 2 business days, though we also recognise that if staff are attending a conference, sporting carnival, on leave, then these times may be extended.
Beyond these workplace protocols for employers, it is very important that we value our staff in our small community by respecting their wellbeing and time away from the classroom. While our staff embrace our small community and love saying hi to our kids and families when they are out and about, the middle of Coles certainly isn’t the best place to discuss students and school. I ask that the community contact teachers via agreed platforms at times relevant to their work if they would like to discuss school-related matters. Also, in small communities, many people have staff mobile numbers for a variety of reasons. The College does not supply staff with mobile phones, so please use the office phone to make an appointment with a staff member or at least ask in advance if it’s okay to chat about a school topic before contacting their personal mobile phone.
Promotional Photos
On Tuesday, 11 February we have engaged DMS Creative to undertake promotional photos that will be used in marketing the College. We will have an array of staged classroom photos, playground photos, along with a variety of shots taken as they are seen by the photographer. Students will be selected for this photo shoot randomly on the day, please ensure your child/ren are well presented in full formal uniform including tie (Years 5 to 12). This photo shoot will have minimal distraction to the students learning at the College on Tuesday.
Peter Cuskelly
Principal
Time flies when you’re having fun! We are already 1 and a half weeks into the year and classrooms are settled and our teachers are getting to know our learners, your children. We welcome 104 new students who join our story this year, we are excited to have you, and your families join the OLSCC Family. At the Commencement Mass our Prep students were welcomed into our College by our Year 12 Seniors. Our theme this year is ‘Called to be the light’ and our seniors were leading the way on Monday at our Commencement Mass. The Year 12 students presented the Prep students with a special Prep journey pin and our Preps presented our Year 12’s with their senior badges. The Prep badge was a new tradition introduced in 2023. This special badge is only given to students enrolled in our current prep class at the commencement of the school year. Ritual and ceremony is important in our celebrations and we look forward to more moments like this throughout the year.
Staff at OLSCC
We are blessed to commence this year full staffed again, there are many schools throughout the state not this lucky. Joining our team this year are 12 new teachers, 1 new administration staff member and 2 new classroom school officers. They will each be introduced in coming weeks on our Facebook page. We are glad to have these wonderful, committed people join our OLSCC Family.

Sentral for Parents (Parent Portal)
All new families should have received their access details for Sentral for Parents (Parent Portal). It is important to use Sentral for Parents to keep up with notices around the College including information about upcoming activities that may involve your child. It is a useful tool for communicating and the College utilises it for many purposes including the dissemination of letters and information, permission granting, booking conferences. It also has a widget that enables you to notify the College about student absences. Student timetables, absences and previous report cards can be viewed on this portal. I encourage families to set the notifications settings so that you do not miss communication from the College. Over the coming weeks we will be including short videos and information sheets in our newsletter with tips to help you navigate the Portal – this week’s are detailed documents on set up and activation of your account. The office can also assist if you run into trouble using this App.
NAPLAN Year 3, 5, 7, 9
NAPLAN is a national literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year. It is the only national assessment all Australian students have the opportunity to undertake. The test window for NAPLAN is 12-24 March 2025.
NAPLAN is a nationwide measure through which parents, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine how well young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning, and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.
- NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process. NAPLAN does not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. A child’s teacher will have the best insight into the child’s educational progress. NAPLAN results do not measure overall school quality.
- NAPLAN questions are directly linked to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics. As such, the best preparation students can do for NAPLAN is to learn what they do in the classroom every day. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for, and students are not expected to do so.
- The assessments allow parents to see how their child is progressing against national standards in literacy and numeracy, and over time. Along with other school assessment reports, NAPLAN supports parents in discussing their child’s strengths and areas for improvement with teachers.
- NAPLAN results can assist teachers by providing additional information to support their professional judgement about students ’ levels of literacy and numeracy attainment and progress.
- NAPLAN can support school improvement by enabling teachers to monitor their students’ progress over time against the national measure, to identify strengths and areas to improve in teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
- Students and parents wishing to familiarise themselves with NAPLAN can visit the public demonstration site on the NAP website. Some past NAPLAN papers are also available.
Volunteers in our College
Volunteers are welcome to assist in the classroom, on excursions and at our tuckshop upon completion of Volunteer Induction Module and return Declaration form. Volunteer Induction must be completed annually at the beginning of the new school year. Declaration forms must be submitted before your day of volunteering to ensure approval is granted.
Information regarding the Volunteer Induction Module can be found on Parent Portal or via the link: Volunteers and Visiting Service Providers
Parking and pick up
Before and after school we supervise a number of areas around the College to ensure safe arrival and departure of the students. The front footpath is supervised at 8:30-8:50am and from 3:10-3:30pm and the Cooper Street fence line from 3:10-3:30pm. Parking around the College can be congested at peak times and parents are encouraged to make regular arrangement with their children to save confusion at home time. Police regularly patrol our school zone to ensure the safety of our students and the compliance of drivers, we encourage this support from the police and we thank parents for following all the road rules.
Loading Zone Passengers – 2min max
In front of Prep we have designated loading area that allows 2 min drop and go between 7am-9am and 2pm-4pm. Parking is monitored by Western Downs Regional Council and fines can be issued for those not following these zone regulations.
Front Car Park & Bus Zone
It is important that parents and extended family who do pick up and drop off are aware that the bus zone and front car park are not suitable places for drop off and pick up. Our staff park in this front car park and this is the location of 3 disabled car park which parents can access based on individual needs. All other student drop off and pick up activity should avoid this area, ustilising the street parking in front of the College or Cooper Street.
Bus transportation
Students who catch buses to and from the College are dropped or collected in the bus zone at the front of our College office. Throughout the morning buses arrive over a longer period of time and staff supervise this arrival as students move from the bus to class. In the afternoon as everyone departs at the same time this area is coordinated by staff on duty. To assist with the coordination of our bus zone in the afternoon we record rolls of bus students.
Please ensure you complete the digital form using the link 2025 BUS TRANSPORTATION to the best of your knowledge as soon as possible to assist with this coordination.
Minor Consent
Throughout the year, our students will have the opportunity to participate in many minor excursions which complement and enhance the academic, spiritual, cultural and sporting offerings provided by Our Lady of the Southern Cross College. With the College Coach, access to learning outside the College is now remarkably more affordable for staff and students alike. Accordingly, to save the administrative tyranny of permission slips repeatedly being sent home, we have collated this form to cover all minor excursions as well as regular activities that the College is engaged in. As per mandatory safety guidelines, parental permission is required for some sporting activities prior to participation. This includes high risk activities like shot put, javelin, discus and rugby league. Wherever these activities are undertaken a risk assessment is carried out and appropriate planning completed to address the risk. We require this form returned for every student in the College, whether permission is given or not. The link to the form was sent out via email on 30/1 please ensure you have completed this form.

In Matthew 5:16, Jesus urges us to let our light shine before others, illuminating the darkness around us and pointing others to the glory of our heavenly Father.
Imagine Jesus, standing on the shores of Galilee, pointing to a city set on a hill, its lights shining brightly against the darkening sky. He reminds us that we, too, are like that city—a brightness that cannot be hidden, meant to shine forth and bring hope to those around us.
Just as a lightbulb must be connected to a power source to shine brightly, our light shines brightest when we abide in Christ, allowing His light to shine through us.
It’s not enough to simply possess the light; we must let it shine. God calls us to be bold and unapologetic in our faith. We refuse to hide our light under a bushel. Instead, we’re to shine brightly, illuminating the way for others until the day Jesus returns to take us home.
Every good and perfect gift comes from God, the Father of heavenly lights. He provides us with good things. He also equips us to do good works that shine His glory into the world. These good works are not merely tasks to check off a list but expressions of our inner transformation. They radiate the love and grace of Christ to those around us.
Living as a beacon in a dark world may not always be comfortable or easy, but it’s worth it. When we live and love radically, people take notice, and God is glorified.
Who do you know that shines their light brightly for Jesus?
How will you shine your light bright for Jesus?
A light bulb just sitting in a box does not shine brightly, it doesn't shine at all. But the moment it's installed in a lamp that's plugged into a power source, it can light the whole room. God is your power source. For your light to shine, you must be abiding in Christ.
Lord God, You are the light of the world. And You have given that same light to me. A light that now shines through me out to the world around me. Let me never forget that others can see You in me. In my words, my actions, my life. Instead of hiding the light within me, give me the strength to put the light on the stand so that the whole world can see who You are through me. Find me worthy to be a bright shining beacon for You so that You may receive all of the praise and glory. In Jesus name, amen.
As you go today, this week and this year, consider your power source, stay plugged into Jesus and be ready to be called to be the light.

Middle Leader Living Your Faith
There have been some changes to the College fees for the 2025 year, particularly in relation to the introduction of a student levy. The student levy incorporates both the laptop levy for the relevant year level, as well as the average cost of the year level camps by sector. It is the intent that the introduction of the student levy will assist in making year level camps accessible to all families and ease the financial pressures of a camp by spreading the cost over the year, rather than on one invoice. Please note, as year level camps are curriculum based and the curriculum program for their duration, it is the intent of these changes that all students will attend these.
There has been an adjustment to the capital levy to make it a flat 20% of tuition fees for the relevant year level. While this isn’t a significant change, it makes it relative to the cost incurred at different year levels. As always, this will assist capital infrastructure development into the future as our College grows. You will see this in action in the construction of phase 1 of the Master Plan.
For families in the Senior Years, please note that there are some subject specific levies for 2025. These levies have been re-introduced in order to provide the appropriate materials for subjects in INTAD and Food. This means that students won’t need to supply their own materials for practical lessons in these subjects.
College fees are determined as an annual fee and the College will continue to invoice this on a per-term basis. A reminder that the College has strict 14-day payment terms for all invoices issued.
Please find below the 2025 College Fee Schedule as endorsed by the College Advisory Council (CAC).
The College will continue to support families who are experiencing genuine financial hardship through concessions. As always, if you have any concerns regarding the payment of your College fees please reach out to our College Business Manager, Sarah Hall for a confidential meeting.
The term 1 fees are expected to be issued by the end of Week 3.

Welcome back to 2025!
Welcome to all our families old and new! We are looking forward to a fantastic year!!

Welcome to the start of a new school year
As we embark on the next phase of an exciting educational journey, we extend our warmest welcome to all families, both returning and new to our College community. The start of the academic year is filled with anticipation, hope, and enthusiasm, and this year is no different. We are delighted to have you with us and look forward to a year of growth, learning, and memorable experiences.
We are committed to providing an environment that fosters academic excellence, creativity, and holistic development. Our dedicated staff has been working tirelessly to prepare for the upcoming year, ensuring that our students receive the best education and support possible. From innovative teaching methods to engaging extracurricular activities, we strive to create a nurturing and stimulating atmosphere where every student can thrive. I challenge all students to seize every opportunity. Do not passively sit back and watch them pass you by. Instead, I encourage everyone to get involved, to explore new interests, to push the boundaries of your comfort zone in healthy and constructive ways. Join an extra-curricular team like Opti-Minds, audition for the musical cast, join a sporting team, and engage in activities that ignite your passions.
As this new chapter begins, we encourage families to also get involved and stay connected with our College community. Whether through attending school events, participating in Learning Discussions or arranging parent-teacher meetings, or joining our FACE team (Family and Community Engagement), your involvement plays a crucial role in enriching the educational experience for our students.
We have a host of exciting events and activities planned for the year ahead, and we can't wait to share them with you. From academic competitions to cultural celebrations, there will be numerous opportunities for our students to showcase their talents and interests. Additionally, we are thrilled to introduce new pedagogical initiatives aimed at enhancing student learning and wellbeing.
We understand that starting a new school year can be both exciting and challenging, and we are here to support you every step of the way. Our College staff, including teachers, counsellors, and school officers, are always available to address any questions or concerns you may have. Together, we can ensure a smooth and successful transition into the new academic year.
Once again, welcome back to school! I am excited to see the Middle Years Plaza and classrooms filled with the energy and enthusiasm of our students. Let's make this school year one to remember, filled with achievements, friendships, and countless moments of joy.
Warm regards,
Craig Cullen
Assistant Principal Middle Years
As we embark on the commencement of a new school year, it is with great joy and excitement that we extend a warm welcome to every member of the OLSCC community. The start of Term 1 brings a sense of renewal, opportunity, and the promise of countless possibilities. Starting back at school can be daunting, but I know that our community will welcome all our present and new students and staff with enthusiasm and empathy. It is wonderful to be back on site with our students in classrooms engaged in learning. It also fantastic to see students socialising and being active during break times and reconnecting with peers and staff.
I would like to say thank you to all parents for your support over the first 2 weeks in managing all the needs of your child’s return to school. You are very much welcome here at our College and the support you have given your child this week has translated to a great start to their education in 2025.
We also welcome some new teachers to the Senior Years team. The students have provided great feedback on the quality of their teachers this week and we have been heartened by the positive feedback received about the lessons and support that they are providing in the classroom. I am very much excited by the quality teaching and learning that will occur across the Senior Years this year.
Senior Years students have made a commendable start to the new year, ensuring that their commitment to our dress standards has been adhered to. I thank all parents for your assistance in having your child presented in such a manner.
The College always receives delightful feedback from visitors and community members on how respectfully our students uphold the appearance of their uniform.
A key to success at OLSCC is partnership - partnerships between the students, their teachers and you, the parents. Please remember that we are only an email or a phone call away if you have any queries or concerns. Staff email addresses are as follows: Firstname.Surname@twb.catholic.edu.au e.g. Rodney.Spain@twb.catholic.edu.au
Throughout the year, parents are encouraged to communicate with their child’s subject teachers as an initial point of contact for any pastoral or academic matters. Parents should have received an email of introduction from your student’s classroom teacher.
Please do not hesitate to make contact should you feel there are other topics that may need addressing throughout the school year as we work to help our young people navigate their journey.
A very important element in helping the students to achieve is what we expect of them. Expectations exert a tremendous influence on what each student can achieve. Research urges teachers and students to set their sights high – and mean it. The result will be improved student learning.
Having high expectations is not all that is needed for students to succeed. Teaching and learning is very complex. But high expectations, from the adults in the students lives, are the launching pad, the base from which students can aim for the stars and, using their own abilities and efforts, achieve their learning goals.
School Attendance
Our goal at OLSCC is for students to experience success by achieving and maintaining a 93% attendance rate.
Classes and learning begin at 8.50am with students required to be at school ready to learn at this time. Students who arrive at 8.50am or later will be late to class which contributes to their absences. 10 minutes late each day roughly equates to 6 and a half days of learning lost in a year.
According to a report by the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation, school attendance is a crucial factor that affects students’ academic performance and long-term outcomes. Students who report positive attendance behaviours in Year 7 are on average 3 months ahead in their learning by Year 9, compared with students who have poor attendance behaviours.
Assessment Calendars
Teachers are currently planning assessments for Semesters 1 and 2. All students and parents & carers will have access to the Semester 1 Assessment Calendar for 2025 via the College website and the Parent Portal App. Currently, Semester 1 is in draft form and will be finalised in the next week.
If you have any questions about assessment, please contact your child's classroom teacher or the relevant Middle Leader Curriculum.
Our Lady of the Southern Cross is responsible for gathering evidence of student achievement on or before the due date for internal assessment instruments.
All students have electronic access to their assessment, and it is their responsibility to adhere to these due dates.
Students are responsible for planning and managing their time to meet the due dates.
Students and parents can contact teachers and Curriculum Leaders via phone or email. Teachers are not able to grant extensions directly with students and parents/carers.
Our Lady of the Southern Cross College is required to adhere to QCAA policies about due dates accepting assignments only on or before the due date unless an extension through AARA processes has been approved. For example, a student who is absent due to family holidays will not be granted an extension for an assignment as this doesn’t meet the AARA guidelines set by QCAA.
Senior Tie Presentation
Congratulations to our Year 12 students on receiving their Senior Ties last Friday! This significant milestone marks the beginning of an exciting and challenging year ahead. As our students don their senior ties with pride, we look forward to supporting the year 12’s with the high expectations they have set for themselves. The dedication, hard work, and perseverance they will need to apply will undoubtedly turn their aspirations and goals into reality. We look forward to celebrating theirs and all students’ achievements and successes throughout the year.
Mr Rodney Spain
Assistant Principal Senior Years

Camp Rock will feature three performances on August 8 and August 9: with a Friday night show, a Saturday matinee, and a final performance on Saturday night.
Rehearsals will be held on Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM.
Additionally, Sunday rehearsals will commence in Term 3, running from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, to facilitate full run-throughs and dress rehearsals.
Attached is the draft rehearsal schedule, indicating which characters are required at each rehearsal. Please note that "Camp Rockers" and "Star Campers" refer to chorus members. This schedule is subject to change based on the needs of the rehearsal process.
There is also a potential school holiday rehearsal, which will be utilised only if necessary. Parents and caregivers will be informed in advance if this rehearsal is required.

Welcome back to 2025! We've had a quiet start to the Tuckshop orders this year and thought it would be a good time to provide parents with information in relation to the Tuckshop.
We are open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Orders are placed in the Flexischools app by 8:30am on the day, and if you haven’t used it this year it will ask you to update your children’s details. At both lunch and afternoon tea time we are open for over-the-counter sales of a variety of ice blocks, chips, and drinks only. Sometimes the line up for a cool ice block on a hot day is quite long as you can imagine.
If you have ordered on Flexischools and need to cancel, please remember that 9am is the latest to ring the Tuckshop due to preparation time, but if your child goes home sick, you can stop in at the Tuckshop and collect their order. Correct selection of your child's order is also vital to avoid upset at lunch time.
Our tuckshop relies on assistance from our generous volunteers. Do you have 2 hours every month you can be Tuckshop superstar? Or even a grandparent that wants to get involved? We would appreciate some new faces in the Tuckshop!
