QISSN Report

Excited and slightly nervous, 10 netball girls from OLSCC headed to Bundaberg Sunday morning, 30th June to play in the Qld Independent Secondary Schools Netball Carnival  hosted for its 20th year by Shalom College. The QISSN Carnival, while being one of, if not the biggest schools netball competition in Australia has as its core – a spirit of competition, teamwork and sportsmanship wrapped in Christian values. Many past competitors have gone on to be Firebirds,  Diamonds and international players. This is the third year that OLSCC Dalby has participated and the team of Gabby Parker and Laney Schloss (captains), Claudia Child, Charlotte Crothers, Shiro Frid, Jasmine Houlder, Bronte Kruger, Maggie Laffy, Sarah McQuaid and Bree Tanks did the College proud yet again.

Playing in Division 8, the girls won 5 out of their 7 games against St James Spring Hill 20-11; Columba Catholic College, Charters Towers 20-16; St Anthonys Townsville 29-14; St Josephs Stanthorpe  18-8 and Mt St Bernard, Herberton 17-7 and played with great courage to lose to St John’s Roma 27-10; and St John Fisher Bracken Ridge 23-6. Ending up 4th on the Div 8 ladder, OLSCC was promoted to play in the Div 7 Quarter Finals against the No 1 Team St Andrews Lutheran Tallebudgera. The whole team played their hearts out in a tight match, going down 19-18. The girls were outplayed in the semi-finals against Roma and in the finals against Assissi College, Coomera, which saw OLSCC finish 8th in Division 7 – a great effort and our best result to date. Congratulations to Jasmine Houlder for winning the Most Valued Player award voted on by home and opposing teams after each game.

A big thank you to the girls for their determination and fighting spirit. All those gym sessions and early morning training sessions paid off. Many thanks to the Coaches – Mrs Judy Appleton and Mrs Shirley Frid, Managers Mrs Maureen Cesari and Ms Wendy Rea and to the parents and supporters who attended the carnival or cheered from home. Your support over the whole year is appreciated.
