Early Years News

Do you ever come across problems that are just slightly too hard for you to solve? You can bet that your child does every day that they come to school! How do you think about a problem like this? Are you not smart enough to solve it? Or have you just not solved it YET? Carol Dweck is a well known researcher in the field of Growth Mindset – the idea that we can grow our brain’s capacity to learn and to solve problems.
The way students THINK about learning has major implications on how and what they actually learn. At OLSCC we consistently promote a ‘growth mindset' in students. Our goal is to inspire students to be comfortable with the use of that powerful word – YET. In doing so, we change the conversations from “I just can’t stretch out that word” to “I just can’t stretch out that word YET.” At our Early Years Excellence Assembly, we discussed the character trait of resilience, which is tied so closely to a growth mindset. We aim to ensure students are resilient enough to keep trying, embrace challenges and take advantage of mistakes made. I often hear the Early Years students telling me that “mistakes mean you are learning” – what a powerful mantra for the growth mindset that will ultimately empower them to become life long learners.

Congratulations to the students who achieved Excellence Awards at our assembly this week. Thank-you to the parents who were able to join us. We encourage a strong parental presence at our Early Years Assemblies, which occur at present on a monthly basis. It would be terrific if you were able to visit us regularly for this occasion. Keep your eye out in the newsletters for updates on the dates for future assemblies!

Finally thank-you to the many, many families who have embraced the uniform policy in it’s entirety during this transition period. This is just a gentle reminder that our grace period ends at the end of Term 1. In particular, this means that all sport shoes will need to be black joggers with red, white or black trim (black/green, black/purple, black/blue do not meet the uniform policy). Further clarification can be found on the SZ app or on page 12-13 of the school diary.
