The Assumption of Mary Thursday 15th August 2024
On Thursday, Catholics and many other Christians celebrated the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This significant feast day recalls the spiritual and physical departure of the mother of Jesus Christ from the earth, when both her soul and her body were taken into the presence of God.
The Assumption is one of the oldest holy days in the Church. It recalls both the happy departure of Our Lady from this earthly life and the lifting of her body into heaven. Unlike Christ’s ascension into heaven by His own power, Mary was assumed, or taken up into Heaven, by God. She didn’t do it under her own power.
The Assumption of Mary can be imagined as her homecoming! Having completed the mission of her earthly life and longing to be with Jesus and Joseph, Mary is now reunited with her son and her husband. What a homecoming that reunion must have been like!
The feast of Mary’s Assumption gives hope and consolation to many as they grieve and mourn the loss of loved ones, believing that the person is not lost or annihilated, but enjoys eternal life with their God who loves unconditionally.
Immaculate Mary, assumed into heaven, teach us to trust in God’s plan the way you did.
Do not let us fear obstacles or uncertainties.
Inspire us and pray for us today, as we celebrate your Assumption.
Amen
