Dancing the Night Away with SRC
A fabulous time was had by all at the SRC Early Years Social last Thursday night! SRC students and staff spent many hours planning, setting up, running then packing up these events and were thrilled to see so many of our College youngsters having a great time singing, dancing, playing games and enjoying the sausage sizzle. The funds raised at the ‘Team Colours’ social and free dress day will go toward sporting equipment at our College as well as the Yes Arusha Safe House, thankyou. Special thanks to Mr & Mrs Blauw for sharing their talents, Miss Manteit for helping out and the Early Years teachers who joined in the fun. The SRC looks forward to seeing everyone at our next event!
Last year, the College Community was asked for input via a survey regarding what Learning Dispositions we felt were most important for our students, your children. Learning Dispositions refer to the way in which learners engage in and relate to the learning process. Our seven focus Learning Dispositions were
- Persistent
- Independent
- Resilient
- Curious
- Motivated
- Optimistic
- Creative.
These Learning Dispositions also link to the Character Strengths that are focussed on each week in the College diary (Year 5-12). There is a wealth of information in the diary to stimulate discussion and reflection with your child on their learning and wellbeing and I encourage parents to check these out. As we enter this busy time of assessment, I encourage you to use these words with your children and talk about how we need these dispositions.
We are gifted by God with our talents and skills, and we then need to use our skills to develop our talents so we can flourish.
"As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another." - 1 Peter 4:10
Father,
Help me see the ways you have uniquely gifted me to serve you and your Kingdom. Thank you for making me just as I am.
Forgive me for the ways I have compared myself and coveted the abilities of others.
I pray that, starting today, I would see the opportunities if front of me to use my gifts and abilities.
In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
FINAL CALL - Intergenerational/Intercultural Wisdom needed
We are planning to start this activity formally next term if you were interested in getting involved please contact us so we can finalize our arrangements. OLSCC are seeking interested persons to be a part of a PRAXIS initiative with Year 9 students, running from Term 2 until the end of the year. The project will involve developing relationships with students, sharing stories, interests and wisdom. Participants will then be interviewed over a series of sessions in order to create films about their life which they will be gifted at the end of the project. Sessions will take place at OLSCC on Wednesdays from 12:30pm – 1:30pm. We hope this project will assist students to learn from other members of the community who have experienced different generations and cultures and strengthen the bonds of our St Joseph’s Parish/OLSCC community.
If interested, please contact Cate Brennan (Cate.Brennan@twb.catholic.edu.au) or Nicholas Blauw (Nicholas.Blauw@twb.catholic.edu.au) or call 0746724111 for more information.

Students have been busy finalizing assessment tasks and teachers have been equally busy collating information about your children to present to you as a formal school report which will be sent home within the next two weeks. Reports can be a time of highs and lows for all involved. Take the time to read through your report with your child and celebrate their achievements. It is equally as important though, to identify areas for future growth. At OLSCC, our aim is to provide an environment where your child feels safe to take risks with their learning and view mistakes, or missteps, simply as a means to finding better ways to be successful. My hope is that this view may help shape our thinking prior to reading reports. We have much to gain by discussing things that have not gone to plan in a manner that looks towards improvement. Additionally, allowing our children to solve their own problems, or fix their own mistakes, builds the necessary skills to develop into happy, productive adults who take responsibility for their actions. Einstein said it best (again!) when he stated “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”

Year 5 and 6 Religious Education
Hail Mary, full of Grace. Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy.
These are both the beginning of Marian prayers and call on Mary, God's mother and our mother to intercede for us.
This Term, both Year 5 and Year 6 have been investigating the Fertile Question; Why do we Pray to Mary? Each student has explored the role Mary plays in the Gospels and in our faith. We have discovered that she was only very young when the angel visited her to announce that she would be the mother of Jesus, the mother of God. She was a very holy woman and had in fact, spent much of her life living in a temple. It is no surprise then that Mary was chosen to bear God in human form, sent to save all on earth.
Both teachers and students alike have loved studying this unit. It has given us the opportunity to remember and even fall in love with traditional Catholic prayers like the Hail Mary and The Magnificat. We have learnt the gospel stories on which they are based. Classes have been learning the history of and praying the Rosary. We have discovered that it is actually a form of meditation. The highlight has been having the opportunity to make our own set of Rosary beads in the form of a decade. Much reflection took place as classes engaged in this practical conclusion to the unit.
Lets hope we can pass on our renewed love of Mary to others.
The Year 7/8 Media elective sees students putting their mobile phones to productive and creative use (compact cameras for those who don’t yet have their own phones). Over the course of the unit, 'iPhotographer', students are given a subject to photograph each week. These subjects include landscape, architectural subjects, sunrise/sunset and animals. Below is a small selection of the extraordinary submissions among many special photographs submitted this semester.
The Dalby Eisteddfod competitions wrapped up last Saturday and the Winner's Concert was held on Tuesday night after a long but exciting week of performances. There were many highlights across all the College entries and lots of first places including Prep Red who finally got their turn to compete last Friday. Prep Red sang 'Daisy, Daisy' for their first place in the Prep section while Prep Blue received a Highly Commended for their performance of 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'.
Invitations for winners to compete at the Winners Concert were extended and we were excited to learn that Year 3/4 were on the program after they won their class with 'The Addams Family' as well as the Vocal group of Sally Lum, Gosego Mosako, Claire Davison and Jacinda Smith who sang So Long, Farewell.

On Tuesday we celebrated another fantastic turnout for our Preppie for a Morning sessions. This session has become so popular that we were bursting at the seams! The pre-Prep children got to experience the true routines of the Prep classroom, and the Prep Red children who hosted the visitors were wonderful buddies! We look forward to seeing many of these little faces again in Semester 2 as we launch into our Shooting Stars pre-Prep Program. This will again be offered twice weekly and will assist in transitioning the children smoothly into the school setting. Please encourage any families you know of who are interested in Prep 2020 to enroll prior to our interview period in August.
Following on from the success of our Prep mornings will be our Come and Try Day for students in Yrs 1-12 on Friday, June 21. Families are asked to register at the office so that prospective students can be placed in appropriate year levels for the day. Parents will also have an opportunity to meet with the Leadership and Administration teams to tour the College and answer any questions. Students are welcome to stay for an hour, a session or a day – choose your own adventure! Please circulate this information to anyone you know may be interested in seeing OLSCC for themselves.

During a recent visit to the PCYC, a number of items of lost property have been collected including College uniform items. There are four black College hats, one almost new looking boys formal College shirt, boys tie and a small sized girls formal shirt with "Alyssa' on the tag. Three of the hats have some markings including R.C.3 (also Canberra Tour on it), Imogen and L.W. If you may have left any of these items at the PCYC, they are now at the College Office.
